(HARRISON, N.J.) - NJ/NY Gotham FC returned home as champions Saturday night, raising their 2025 National Women's Soccer League title banner before playing to a 0–0 draw against the North Carolina Courage at Sports Illustrated Stadium.
The home opener drew a record 10,796 fans, marking a milestone moment for the club as it kicked off its title defense and welcomed the return of the National Women’s Soccer League season.
“Obviously super proud of the girls for what they did last year,” said midfielder Savannah McCaskill. “It was a super proud moment as a teammate to celebrate what they accomplished last year and have that carry over into this year.”

Gotham opened the match with strong possession and attacking movement, led by Rose Lavelle, whose vision and pace created opportunities in transition.
Lilly Reale stood out on the ball, consistently finding teammates in space and helping connect play through the midfield.
“We definitely grew from the last performance, but having composure in the final third is something we want to see more of each game,” Reale said.
Despite early control, the match quickly developed into a fast-paced, transitional battle.
“It was a bit of a transitional game, which is not what we wanted,” McCaskill said. “In the second half, you saw more ball movement, more fluidity… which is more our style of play.”
North Carolina settled into the game midway through the first half, generating chances while goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan made several key saves to keep Gotham off the board.
On the other end, Ann-Katrin Berger delivered a strong performance, preserving the clean sheet as the teams entered halftime scoreless.
“I think for us the main positive is another clean sheet,” head coach Juan Carlos Amorós said. “We take a lot of pride in the way we play… but we still need to polish certain things to be more effective going forward.”
Gotham continued to generate attacking pressure but was unable to convert in the final third.
Second Half

The second half continued at a similar tempo, with both sides creating opportunities but unable to find a breakthrough.
A key moment came in the 62nd minute when captain Tierna Davidson returned to action at home for the first time since suffering a torn ACL in March 2025.
“It felt amazing. I was very happy to be back out there… " It’s another step in the recovery journey,” Davidson said.
Gotham continued to press forward, with Lavelle creating dynamic runs and movement in the attacking third, while North Carolina remained organized defensively and dangerous in transition.
Seven minutes of stoppage time were added, but neither side was able to capitalize.
“We want to be consistent across the board,” said midfielder Jaelin Howell. “Especially at home, we want to produce for our fans.”
