In the ever-evolving digital marketing and media landscape, Joshua Mead, co-founder of Meadia Agency, has carved a niche for himself and his team. With a rapid growth trajectory that saw a 30 percent increase in their client base within the first year, Mead emphasizes the importance of a solid foundation, trustworthy partnerships, and a creative yet data-driven approach. Mead sits down with Ezzah Rafique to share invaluable insights into maintaining integrity while expanding a business, the role of data in marketing, and the significance of patience and balance as an entrepreneur.
Building Trust and Integrity
When discussing the explosive growth of Meadia Agency, Mead credits his success to the people he surrounds himself with. "One, having a good foundation and network around you," he states. "It's been really hard finding people that I can trust and be fully confident in." Mead highlights the importance of aligning with individuals who share similar values and understand the business's mission. Reflecting on his earlier experiences, he recalls facing challenges with teamwork and decision-making. "There was a lot of conflict around how we were running things. We were fresh out of college and didn’t know what we were doing," he admits. Learning from these early hurdles, Mead now prioritizes building a reliable team, emphasizing that trust is essential to maintain the integrity of what he's creating.
The Balance of Data and Creativity
In today's digital marketing arena, understanding data is crucial for success. "Data, for me, should be the driving factor behind everything," Mead asserts. He explains how insights from platforms like Instagram can reveal consumer behavior and inform marketing strategies.
"You have to find that balance and still be able to be creative, inclusive, whatever it may be. The data really helps tell that story."
Mead highlights how businesses must now navigate a landscape where traditional marketing methods have evolved into more nuanced, digital strategies. "Marketing tactics have become very repetitive and oversaturated," he warns. This realization drives his commitment to creating unique content that stands out from competitors. His focus on originality and bold content aims to capture the audience's attention in an oversaturated market.
Finding Work-Life Balance
As an entrepreneur, Mead candidly admits that achieving work-life balance is a constant challenge. "Every dollar that comes in is driven by me, so every minute that I'm not invested in the business is a minute that money is potentially not coming in," he explains. Drawing inspiration from family members who are also entrepreneurs, Mead has observed the pitfalls of overworking. "I've seen how my uncle has overworked himself," he reflects. Understanding the importance of longevity in business, he emphasizes the need to maintain a healthy balance for both happiness and productivity.Â
In recent years, Mead has cultivated habits that support his well-being, including a daily gym routine and setting boundaries for work hours. "I try to shut my laptop every night by 10 o'clock. If it's not done, it's not done," he asserts, advocating for the importance of time away from work to recharge.
The Value of Patience
One of Mead's most significant lessons throughout his journey is the value of patience. "I personally am a very impatient person," he confesses, sharing that his desire for quick results often led to frustration. However, through his experiences, he has come to appreciate the slow but steady nature of growth in entrepreneurship. "Things don't happen on your time. They don't happen when you want them," he acknowledges. Mead recounts his journey after graduating in 2020, applying to numerous jobs and facing rejection. "I was very frustrated, but now I’m happy that I never got that full-time job because my business would have been nowhere near where it is," he reflects, illustrating how patience and trust in the process have paved the way for his current success.
Advice for Marginalized Creatives
Recognizing the systemic challenges marginalized creatives face in the industry, Mead offers sage advice to those looking to break into marketing or PR. "It's going to be harder," he admits. He emphasizes the necessity of having a clear strategy and understanding one’s goals beyond surface-level achievements.
"Finding that person that you trust and that you know is going to go to bat for you is really important," he advises, highlighting the need for advocates in a competitive space where marginalized voices can be overlooked.
