NEW YORK (May 12, 2025) - The New York Sirens held an end-of-season media availability with head coach Greg Fargo and general manager Pascal Daoust. Fargo and Daoust were asked various questions reflecting on the previous 2024-25 season, and gaining insight on expanding opportunities for the 2025-26 season.
Daoust, when prompted about Sarah Fillier’s performance and the importance of re-signing her, praised her talent and impact on the team’s culture. He expressed interest in securing Fillier on a long-term basis and highlighted how New York is a great market for athletes. “We want to see whether or not we can create the best environment to be, not only a part of, but to take charge of. ”In contrast, when discussing the upcoming expansion draft, he discussed the challenges of creating the best scenario possible to maintain the Sirens’ values and culture. The question draws the main focus: “How can we build the best team, not only for the coming season, but years to come?” Daoust emphasized.
In his first year of coaching beyond the NCAA, head coach Greg Fargo was asked what that transition was like for him. He stated how he appreciates the opportunity to focus solely on hockey, “One of the things that I really enjoyed was just the fact that we get to dive head first into hockey every single day.”
Fargo also reflected on the lessons learned from the first season, “We started to see some of the fruits of that, but, there is still a lot to learn and reflect upon, and all of it being hockey and culture related, that we’re going to make those adjustments in the off season.”
Fargo emphasized the importance of reflecting and making adjustments in the off-season to improve for the next season, he believes the foundation wrapping up will help them build upon that to be more situational-focused. “As a resilient group overall, I really like how we went about some of the development of our younger players, and some of our players that are now in our organization and program. I think they’ve continued to show a lot of growth throughout the year, some of which have had some great experiences that they’re going to be able to build upon in the years to come.”
The Sirens started their season with a 6-4 record within the first 10 games of the season, but ultimately missed out on a playoff spot in the Walter Cup, which was an unexpected turn of events. Fargo described the season as one of learning and progress and said the team is committed to putting in the work during the offseason to avoid a repeat outcome.
The Sirens emphasize that their strong team culture is as crucial to their success as individual talent in the postseason. Fargo was asked how he approached building a team culture from day one, “You spend a whole lot of time reflecting on what the team dynamics or culture was in the past, but really just kind of draw a new line in the sand, and started to talk about what we wanted as a team from day one.” He added, “We can continue to take strides there, and it will all have an impact on how we perform on the ice.”
The postseason press conference highlighted the Sirens’ plans for the offseason, including draft strategy, team evaluations, and ways to increase fan engagement, including playing more games at the Prudential Center. We are excited to see what's next for the Sirens and the rest of the PWHL this season.
