The Marias - Live in San Diego

The Marías kicked off their San Diego stop on their North American tour with a mesmerizing performance. Touring in support of their latest album, Submarine, which has received widespread acclaim from both critics and fans, the band delivered an unforgettable night of music, visuals, and heartfelt moments.

From the moment the lights dimmed and the band took the stage, the first thing I noticed was the set design which was both simple and striking, featuring a soft, white circle shape that perfectly complemented the silhouette of lead singer María Zardoya. This design choice set the tone for a night where every detail was thoughtfully curated to enhance the experience and atmosphere.

One of the most captivating aspects of the performance was the creative use of lighting. The Marías used blue lights to accompany songs from Submarine, red lights for tracks from their previous album Cinema, and a mix of neutral colors like orange and white for songs from their EPs and singles. This attention to detail in the visual presentation added a new layer of depth to the performance, making each song feel distinct and special.

As the show progressed, María Zardoya took a moment to connect with the audience on a personal level, asking if there were any Latinos in the crowd. She called out to fans from Guatemala, Venezuela, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico, with the loudest cheers coming from her Mexican supporters. This interaction led seamlessly into a medley of her biggest Spanish hits, including "Ay No Puedo" and "Lejos De Ti," which had the crowd singing along passionately.

A standout moment of the night was when The Marías performed their collaboration with Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny, "Otro Atardecer." Zardoya urged the fans to start dancing, then made a surprise move by running off stage and into the crowd, serenading fans who were further back. This spontaneous interaction created an intimate connection between the artist and the audience, making it an unforgettable night for those in attendance.

As the night drew to a close, María Zardoya expressed her gratitude to the fans and her team, emphasizing that none of this would be possible without the hard work of everyone behind the scenes. The crowd erupted in cheers, calling for an encore. Zardoya soon returned to the stage in a completely new outfit, a stunning white dress, before stepping into a tub of water to perform "Paranoia." She closed the show with two of The Marías' biggest hits, "Cariño" and "All I Really Want Is You," leaving the audience in awe.

In summary, this concert was an extraordinary experience, showcasing not only María Zardoya’s energy and charisma but also the band’s impeccable musicianship, particularly the saxophone player and guitar player, a thoughtful set design, and striking visual choices. Fans of The Marías, both old and new, should not miss the opportunity to catch them live and experience their latest album, Submarine.
